TRADITIONAL GAMES OF EL SALVADOR. (UNIT 9)

Remembering is to return to live, or at least that's what my great-grandmother used to tell me with a smile on her face. Remembering our whole life, many memories come to our mind, people we once knew, places we once visited, inseparable friends, jokes and games with our friends or classmates. Unfortunately, times have changed, and the games are not the same as they were 10 years ago, technology has taken over the fun, so in the form of a tribute, I want to share my top five of traditional games from El Salvador that when I was little, I used to play every afternoon. If you're from my generation, you will like them.

1. A LA VÍBORA DE LA MAR (To the sea viper).
“A la víbora, víbora de la mar por aquí pueden pasar los de adelante corren más y lo de atrás se quedarán, tras, tras, tras. Campanita de oro déjame pasar con todos mis hijos menos los de atrás, tras, tras, tras. Será sandía, será melón, será tu tata que está pelón…" Every child in my neighborhood knew the lyrics of that song. The last time I remember, I had started playing after doing my homework until my mom called me for dinner. I should have stopped playing at that moment, but I decided to play 5 more minutes. It was a game that could not be missed, very fun.

2. CHIBOLAS (Marbles).
This game is universal, and although there were many variants, the essence was almost always the same: throw one or several marbles to try to approach others or target holes. When you won a hand you used to take the marbles of the other player or the opposing players. I stopped playing for a few days during my childhood because I had lost all my marbles. I used to win many marbles, but during those days I was sick and I lost easily.

3. ESCONDELERO (Hide-and-Seek).
Playing hide-and-seek was exciting, fun and above all very tired, if you played it like me, you know what I mean, this game could spread throughout the neighborhood or suburb looking for the best hiding place to win the game. The phrase that identifies this game is: “1, 2, 3 para mí y todos mis amigos” (1, 2, 3, for me and all my friends). When I looked for my friends, they used to hide in less thoughtful places. This was one of the most exciting games of my childhood, I had never played something so exciting before.

4. TROMPO (Spinning top).
The spinning top is one of the best-known games, currently still selling tops at the carnivals in our country, one of my favorite games without doubt, but dangerous for its sharp tip, it requires a good technique to place the spinning top on your hand , some managed to make that game an art. I remember that one of my friends hurt his finger playing a spin, he had been trying a new trick. When I realized this, he had bled a little. I didn't know what to do, but fortunately someone took him to the clinic, and by the time he returned, he had managed to master his new trick. So, this game is a little dangerous, but very funny once you master it.

5. CAPIRUCHO.
The game consists of inserting the stick in the "capirucho" the greater number of consecutive times. If it fails, the turn is lost. Like the spinning top, this game can easily be found at carnivals in our country like spinning top, in different colors and shapes but with the same sense of fun. I used to play with my classmates at school breaks, and I was very good at it. One day, I lost my capirucho and I could not play until the next morning, I had left my capirucho under my bed. I had blamed my sister for taking it, but it was my fault and I disbanded with her. I had been practicing that night until I fell asleep. I recommend you this game because like me you can not stop playing it for hours.

Many of these games bring me very funny memories, and make me feel like a child again. I hope you have enjoyed this top and have brought good memories to your mind.

Never stop being a child, have fun and be happy without worries!
